How much does Trupanion cost a month? ›

TRUPANION: We offer one simple plan for all dogs and cats that covers all new illnesses and injuries with no payout limits for life. This means no annual renewals, either. Just one plan for the life of your pet. OTHER PROVIDERS: Many have annual limits, annual renewals, multiple exclusions, and confusing plans.

Trupanion coverage is robust and tailored to have your pet's back for all new and unexpected injuries and illnesses. Our coverage is based on the actual prices veterinarians charge for care — from diagnostic testing and medications to hospitalizations and everything in between.

Typical deductibles range from $0 to $1000, but averages are typically closer to $100, $250, or $500. For example, if your plan has a $200 deductible, you will have to pay the first $200 out of pocket before the insurance company will start reimbursing you for vet bills.

Bottom Line: Trupanion's accident and illness plan offers expansive coverage and it has no caps on payouts. But its policies are, on average, more expensive than others in our rating, and it doesn't offer a wellness plan. Also, pets 14 and older can't be enrolled in a Trupanion plan.

You can enroll your pet any time with Trupanion before their 14th birthday. Additionally, pets enrolled prior to this enrollment age limit can enjoy full pet medical insurance coverage for life (in other words, we'll keep covering them after they turn 14).

Trupanion Cancer Coverage

Trupanion offers unlimited payouts at a 90% reimbursement rate. Its accident-and-illness plan covers hereditary conditions, congenital conditions and other unexpected illnesses, including cancer. With a Trupanion policy, your pet is covered for cancer and related treatments.

We recommend an annual limit of $10,000 for most pets, offering enough coverage for a sudden emergency or illness. For reference, a single trip to an emergency care clinic can cost upwards of $375 to $965 for cats and $534 to $1,285 for dogs.

The average cost of pet insurance for a dog is $51 a month and $27 a month for a cat (for a policy with $5,000 of annual coverage, a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement level). The factors that affect pet insurance costs are breed, age of pet, where you live and the amount of coverage you choose.
