Are scarves still in style?

While we’d argue that scarves are a timeless trend you can wear every year, there are various styles trending in 2024. Firstly, skinny scarves are taking the lead. While they regain popularity in 2022, Y2K skinny scarves are still all the rage today, as seen on Malia Obama and Christina Aguilera. Picture long, lightweight scarves either in bold patterns or solid colours—these are the ultimate accessories for those aiming to elevate their style.

Moving on to blanket scarves—these cosy, oversized pieces continue to grab the attention of style lovers. Ideal for winter, they not only provide warmth but also introduce a bohemian flair to your wardrobe.

Lastly, scarf-like headbands are making a significant comeback, adding a vintage and playful touch to outfits. This trend offers a unique way to incorporate scarves into your look, bringing a hint of retro charm while keeping things fresh and trendy.

Scarves are big in SS24. We’re talking about bold bandanas, slinky scarves, headscarves, oversized blanket scarves, and more. Satin scarves are also in this season, whether worn tied around the face, as bandanas, headscarves, neckerchiefs or even as tops.

Knitted scarves are also joining in on the trend, featuring patterns like braids, rhombuses, and fringes.

What scarves are out of fashion in 2024?

From what I’ve observed, very thick and chunky knit scarves and neon-coloured patterns seem to be fading from the fashion scene. It’s not that they’ve lost all their charm, but the spotlight has definitely shifted towards more minimalist and versatile designs. So, if you’re looking to stay on top of the latest trends, you might want to give these a miss this year.

How to wear a scarf

There are countless ways to wear a scarf. If you want to focus on the satin scarf, this year is all about wearing it as a headscarf.

If you’re looking to focus on the popular styles, you can start with the simple loop style. You can wear it by folding a square scarf into a triangle and draping it over your neck with the point in front. Fancy something a bit more chic? Try the Parisian Knot by folding a rectangular scarf in half and tying the ends loosely at the side.

You can also wear it as a skinny scarf headband by folding the scarf into a triangle and tying it around your head like a headband. Or, go for the neck scarf tie, where you need to fold the skinny scarf into a long strip and tie it around your neck.

These are just a few ways to style scarves. Just like what we always say at Wear Next, we encourage you to experiment and choose the best style that suits your taste. You can also check out Claudya Moreira for inspiration.

What colours will be trending in 2024?

Pastel colours are definitely at the forefront this year. During the SS24 fashion shows, popular designers like Versace, Bottega Veneta, and Dior have graced pastel hues on the runways. We’ve also seen them in popular streetwear brands like Off-White and Balenciaga, with pastels incorporated into graphic prints and accessories.

Meanwhile Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2024 is Peach Fuzz, a warm peach color.

Now that we’ve eased well into the year, we’re ready to sport this year’s trending colours. If you’re a fan of pastel hues, this may be the year for you. 2024 is all about pastel colours and dopamine dressing.

Make sure you take out your peach fuzz, mint greens, and icy pastels out of hiding — or stock up on new pieces if you feel like it.
