Bored with your closet? Me too. Sometimes I just get uninspired by my clothes. Not that there’s anything wrong with them, but after a pandemic and two kids I don’t leave the house as much as I used to. Basically, I feel like I forget how to dress. Especially when it’s cold outside. So I took a trip through the Poor Little It Girl archives to find some casual winter outfits for petite women I can wear again. 30 outfits to be exact!

30 Casual Winter Outfits For Petite Women | Poor Little It Girl (1)

After I browsed through 13 years of cold weather outfits (yes, I’ve been writing my blog for thirteen years, almost 14 actually…crazy huh?!) I took a deep dive into my closet and donated items that no longer fit. I put items I love but don’t wear as often towards the front so that I can be reminded to wear them more often, and items I tend to always grab a little in the back. Still important pieces, but my eyes need a little refresh when I look in my closet.

Winter dressing means lots of layers and heavy coats and well, it’s easy for looks to get a bit repetitive and albeit boring. But by revisiting some of my favorite Poor Little It Girl looks I created over the years, I was able to come up with some creative ways to dress for winter all while staying stylish. So in today’s post, I’m sharing a roundup of 30 winter outfits that are flattering for petite frames. Check them out and click the photos to be redirected to each original blog post too!

1. Leggings, Denim Jacket, and Sneakers

Of course, I had to start off my list of 30 casual winter outfits for petite women with leggings. I’m not ready to quit them just yet. When paired with an oversized denim jacket and Converse sneakers – I’d say this is one of those iconic winter looks that we all own, wear and love! If you want warm leggings, find a pair that are fleece-lined!

2. Sweater Dress and Ankle Boots

When it’s cold out, my idea of a quick and easy “dressed up” look is always a sweater dress and ankle boot outfit. I mean, it’s basically just an oversized cozy knit that is long enough to pass as a dress. So sneaky! I like adding on a few accessories like a belt and headband to elevate my outfit just a bit.

3. Pink Coat and Jeans

Ever since I purchased my very first pink coat way back in the day when I lived in Washington, DC, I’ve always had a soft spot for this fun bold outwear. In a season where most of us live in our darker neutral coats, why not have some fun and step out in a bit of color?

4. Long Cardigan and Jeans

I love throwing on a long cardigan with a standard denim and button-down shirt combination. It really ties any outfit together, plus it keeps you warm. I like my long cardigans to hit a few inches above my knees so that it doesn’t take over my entire body.

5. Head To Toe Black

When all else fails, go for black! Head-to-toe black is iconic…and for good reason. Somehow head-to-toe black just comes together to look so chic. And hell, when you’re freezing it’s nice to not have to think too much about putting a look together. Grab all the black and you’re good to go!

6. Sweatshirt and Distressed Denim

I actually had to do a cleanout of all my sweatshirts in my closet recently because I owned way too many. They were overflowing! But I guess when you’re in a pandemic and a first-time mom who can’t leave the house…you amass quite the collection! But hey, with distressed jeans and slip-on sneakers, you can’t go wrong with a great sweatshirt.

7. Shacket and Sweater

I have to say, I love a little pop of color in the wintertime. And my latest color combo obsession is tan and lavender. By pairing this tan shacket (that’s oh so cozy!) and easy lavender knit – I created one of my go-to outfits for the season.

8. Floral Dress with Tights

Ok so maybe this isn’t necessarily a casual winter outfit but it’s still a fun winter look I had to share. Floral prints aren’t reserved just for the spring. A darker floral print party dress pairs perfectly with black opaque tights and heels for a great date night look.

9. Long Tan Coat, Striped Shirt, and Jeans

The Abercrombie Dad Coat had to make the list, that was a given! When you need to add a warm layer to a traditional striped shirt and jeans look, go for the long tan coat rather than a marshmallow-looking puffer jacket. It elevates any look and I mean, this coat is just the best!

10. Sweatshirt and Blazer

I am back at it with more sweatshirts but this time, I threw on a blazer to take a super casual look and elevate it just a bit. This is a great outfit idea for when you want to be casual, but still, look put together. The trick here is to find a blazer that’s a bit oversized/loose so it fits over a sweatshirt.

11. Yellow and Leopard

I feel like people don’t embrace wearing yellow enough, especially in the winter. You want to be sure to find the best sunny shade for your skin tone but, when you do, go for it! Love this bold marigold sweater with leopard print flats and classic dark-wash jeans.

12. Plaid Scarf and Skinny Jeans

If you still have those iconic plaid blanket scarves in your closet, break them out on those cold winter days. Keep it casual with neutral-colored jeans, sweaters, and boots so that the scarf can really be the focal point of your outfit.

13. Midi Skirt and Sweater

If you’re heading to the office, why not try to recreate this midi skirt and sweater look? It’s professional but not nearly as stuffy as a traditional suit. The trick to making sure a midi skirt works on petite women is to tuck in your top all the way, even if it’s a sweater!

14. Pink, Tan, and White

One of my most recent blog posts and I am still in LOVE with this color combination. Not sure why it took me so long to put pink, tan, and white together but alas, it’s the perfect mixture of soft shades that work for cold winter days. And again we have the Abercrombie Dad Coat back as my pick for the best winter coat.

15. Long Black Sweater Dress

I named this black ribbed midi dress as the one style of dress that every woman should own and I still stand by that statement. Y’all, pregnant or not – this dress style is essential to your wardrobe rotation. Wear it bare-legged or add on some layers like tights and a coat to keep extra warm but if you want comfort, this style dress is it!

16. Flannel Shirt and Denim Jacket

There is nothing better than a super soft flannel shirt. But I typically see them paired with blue jeans and sneakers. Why not layer your own flannel shirt with a denim jacket, black wash jeans (or even black faux leather leggings), and booties for a casual but still dressed-up look for the next time you head out of the house?

17. Puffer Coat and Jeans

For when it’s really cold outside, you need to invest in a great puffer coat. Something that can withstand the elements like wind and snow and also keep you warm. Don’t overthink casual winter outfits like this – pair them with sneakers, jeans, and a soft sweatshirt.

18. Tall Boots, Dress, and Trench

Yes, even petite women can wear tall boots and a long coat…I promise. You just have to find those right proportions. This head-to-toe look is perfect for a business casual day at the office. I have on a check print dress and burgundy bag that add a bit of color but aren’t distracting.

19. Jumpsuit and Long Coat

I actually love a super soft and cozy loungewear jumpsuit when I’m at home. But did you know you can wear these one-piece wonders out of the house too? Just throw on a long coat and leather sneakers and you’re all set!

20. Fleece Pullover and Jeans

If you don’t own an Abercrombie pullover like this fleece one, you’re missing out. I live in this oversized outwear layer when I need something to keep warm in a jiffy. If the fleece isn’t your thing, Abercrombie also makes a sherpa version that’s just as cozy.

21. Monochromatic Blue

I love a good monochromatic look. Be it black, pink, or blue – creating a look from your closet with all the same color palettes is easy and a bit unexpected. Bonus points if your sweater is fuzzy like mine…seriously the best on cold winter days!

22. Red Coat and Rain Boots

If it’s snowy where you live, chances are you own a pair of knee-high rain boots. But let’s face it, they can be a bit hard to style. Pair them with skinny jeans and a statement red coat so that the eye is drawn up toward your face. And yes, add that red lip as well…why not!

23. Ruffle Midi Skirt and Ankle Boots

Think you can’t wear a midi skirt and ankle boots together? Think again! This ruffle midi skirt is such a fun piece, it had to be the star of the show. Take your own statement midi skirt and pair it with a neutral sweater and fleece-lined tights. I love ankle boots with the wrap style of this skirt so you still see a bit of leg.

24. Rose Gold Sneakers and Sweatshirt

I just rediscovered these sneakers in my closet and am SO excited I did…who doesn’t love rose gold kicks?! I love a good matchy-matchy moment so keep your casual sneakers and sweatshirt look fun by coordinating your top with your shoes. Talk about a casual winter outfit for petite women, am I right?

25. Blue and Orange

I never knew I loved this color combination until this look, and now I’m obsessed! Soft shades of blue paired with rusty orange are such a fun pairing in the winter. It’s season-appropriate shades but somehow still feels a bit unexpected. Go for darker wash jeans to tie the look together.

26. Floral Maxi Dress and Sweater

A long-sleeved maxi dress for winter, yes, please! Take that dress from spring and fall into winter by adding on tights, ankle boots, and a cropped sweater. Check out the original blog post to see what it looks like when you wear the sweater on top of the dress, so cute!

27. Graphic Sweatshirt and Denim

I absolutely love a graphic sweatshirt. It’s fun to make a bit of a statement with a message on your shirt, right? Now this look is a bit outdated (hello sock bun, ha!) but the pieces still work – graphic sweatshirt, distressed denim, and Converse sneakers. you can’t go wrong!

28. Long Cardigan and Joggers

Comfort is king, and nothing is more comfortable than a cozy long cardigan and elastic waist joggers. Who’s with me on that? Tie your own long cardigan and joggers look together with a striped shirt, cashmere scarf, and beanie. Adding on a few accessories really elevates this loungewear look.

29. Over-The-Knee Boots and Skinny Jeans

Can petite women wear over-the-knee boots, you bet! I shared all my tips on how to style OTK boots with skinny jeans when you’ve got short legs so pay attention. It’s a great way to elongate your petite frame and keep those legs warm in the winter. Talk about a win-win!

30. Long Black Coat and Brown Boots

And finally, bring on the layers! When it’s really cold, you have to be strategic with the order and thickness of the layers you put on to stay warm. Start with a thin long sleeve, go for a medium-weight sweater and finish it off with a long black wool coat. And yes, this is also the Abercrombie Dad Coat…told y’all it’s that good!

Winter Fashion Essentials For Petites

While I definitely wear more than a handful of items during the winter months (as you’ve seen in this post alone!), I’d say there are a few I wear over and over and would consider my must-haves. These are the pieces I’d definitely include on my petite clothing winter wardrobe essentials list – things I can’t image surviving without.

Leggings

Who didn’t see that one coming? When it’s cold outside I want nothing more than to be warm and cozy, and what’s cozier than a pair of high-quality leggings? Paired with a button-down shirt, an oversized sweater, or your favorite sweatshirt, you really can’t go wrong.

Ankle Boots

I personally think ankle boots are the most versatile winter boots. You can wear them with jeans or dresses and there are so many different styles to choose from, whether you prefer a Chelsea boot, a flat boot, or one with a slight heel.

Straight Leg Jeans

If this were a year ago, I would have said skinny jeans. But this year the gods have smiled on us and have given us a little extra room, and, well, I don’t hate it! I love the opportunity to try a new denim trend and straight-leg jeans are where it’s at. Just make sure they aren’t too long – the hem should hit just below your ankle. Don’t let your pant leg gather on the top of your shoe or worse, drag it on the ground.

Sweater Dresses

I love wearing sweater dresses during the winter, they’re a great way to keep warm but also feel a little bit more dressed up. Depending on just how warm you need to be, you can wear them with tights or with your bare legs exposed. And did I mention how comfortable they are? Another checkmark in the win column, for sure.

So now I’m curious … what items would you list on your winter fashion essentials list? Let me know in the comments below!
